MLM is a marketing program that creates a sales force by compensating distributors for selling company products and for the sales of other distributors they recruit. Many people compare the programs to pyramid schemes however, there is a distinct difference. Legitimate multi level marketing companies like Mary Kay for instance are primarily based on product sales. Pyramid schemes on the other hand make money solely by recruiting participants.

Make sure you thoroughly research any MLM program you are considering before joining. There are so many scams on the Internet that it can be extremely difficult to tell a legitimate opportunity from a fraudulent one. 

If you look at all the ads for MLM marketing on the web you may start to notice a pattern of marketing to hopeful entrepreneurs. This is especially true in uncertain economic times like today.  Promises of wealth and financial freedom are the hallmark of these programs.  The promises are often deceptive. I am sure there are some MLM marketers that have made an abundance of money doing this but they are far and few between.
